Ego vs. Confidence
Probably the most common phrase a person uses to provide encouragement is “just be confident!” Yes, maybe you can fake it 'til you make it’, but how much can you really fake confidence until it turns into something else? Where do you draw the line between confidence and ego? Don't fall into the trap of over-compensating for a lack of genuine confidence! Here's how:
Firstly, Don't Obsess Over Your Image
The way to self-confidence is just to take action on good intentions. Don't overthink about yourself too much. Trying to project an image, obsessing over your professional presence, thinking too much about how confident you are – ironically, it'll make you a twinge insecure. Instead, focus on doing rather than trying to perfect an image that feels unnatural. As overstated as it is, the most important thing to do is to be yourself.
Don't Make Everything About You
Noticing a trend here? Every job provides a service to others in some way. If you're demanding recognition and credit for everything you do, you're not acting confidently. How to spin this around? Well, figure out why you need so much recognition. Do you feel inadequate? Do you feel unappreciated or taken advantage of? Go straight to the inner issue and work on fixing it. That's what a confident person would do.
Release Close-minded Thoughts
Sometimes ego gets the best of us because we've been conditioned to believe what society makes us believe – this type of person can't do this, that type of company will never accomplish that, etc. It can be easy to fall into the trap of being judgmental. You don't gain confidence from others' failures. Instead, if you really know better, offer to help out if you can.
